Covid and Mental Health Treatment
The novel coronavirus, also referred to as COVID-19, traveled rampantly through the world, affecting millions of individuals in a variety of ways. Many states across America implemented stay-at-home orders for all non-essential workers, in efforts to slow the spread of the virus. For many this meant forced closures of restaurants, schools, entertainment venues and more. Those that contracted and endured the virus will be forever impacted by its severity, and for every individual that died from COVID-19, did so alone with loved one’s unable to be by their side. Many have and continue to face financial hardship as the economy struggles to regain its security. The world was ill prepared for this pandemic and the emotional repercussions will no doubt be astounding. Though impacted greatly by the increased safety measures, and for some assuming a different setting, the majority of mental health treatment options in California during COVID-19 remained open and operational to those in need, as mental health services were deemed essential.
WHAT CHANGED?
There are a plethora of different mental health illnesses, and each benefit from a somewhat unique treatment plan. Depending on an individual’s needs mental health treatment could comprise of any combination of psychotherapy, medication, case management, hospitalization, and/ or attending support group meetings. Though mental health services offered did not exactly change, the format and way they were provided had to shift so as to align with the strict COVID-19 safety measures. For example, many individual psychotherapy sessions moved from in person sessions to distance sessions that were conducted using a secure video or Telehealth communication method. The same was true for outpatient services, such as group therapy sessions and support group meetings.
Inpatient treatment programs that remained open were obliged to adhere to strict, and evolving guidelines set forth by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Once COVID-19 began to surge through California, most mental health treatment programs fell quickly in line and began to closely monitor the safety guidelines, implement any applicable changes, and continue to provide its services to those in need. Furthermore, many began integrating pandemic-specific coping mechanisms and teaching helpful strategies to aid in the newfound challenges associated with navigating the effects of living during a pandemic into treatment practices.
